from All Roads Lead to Here
UNDER A STILL SKY
It is a light December day, so quiet, I can hear
myself breathe as the scissors thin in slow motion.
Clumps of gray drift across the floorboards
to the grass, like dreams you want to forget.
Nothing matters but each strand. The sun feels
gentler here in the shaded deck. In the front porch,
it takes aim, as we sway in the hammock. The heat
making us sleepy, I lean into you, a reflecting light.
Two yellow bellied flycatchers flitter over the red
bottlebrush blossoms. They are hovering, like us.

Standing Prayer
for Maureen
This morning I place my purple mat by a different window to contemplate another view of this new landscape: hurricane dead oaks still reaching among kneeling green cabbage palms and swaying pampa grasses. My downward dog, a supplication. Today it’s you and yours I think about. I stretch and rise. My warrior pose a dare. The sun ascends. I conjure up your image as the sky shifts.
may it fill you, me,
and fruit of our wombs with grace
light is the halo

The Poetic Justice League’s founding members—Chris Green, Jan Bottiglieri, cin salach, and Tony Trigilio—asked groups of poets from across the country to write pantoums about America’s gun insanity and called them “semi-automatic pantoums." I collaborated with poets Maureen Seaton, Holly Iglesias, and Nicole Hospital-Medina to complete our Semi-Automatic pantoum, “America’s Rifle.” The poem is included in MYTH AMERICA by Anhinga Press as well.
